Freedom is a hybrid AUV/ROV developed with Chevron, TotalEnergies, and Equinor since 2014; it reached TRL 6 in 2022 for autonomous low-altitude pipeline inspection with onboard obstacle detection, autonomous avoidance, and route replanning using INS, laser scanning, and multibeam sonar. The Liberty resident E-ROV operates from a seabed docking station with a 550 kWh battery and is piloted entirely from an Onshore Remote Operations Center over 4G LTE using Oceaneering's proprietary Remote Piloting and Automated Control Technology (RPACT). Tethered work-class vehicles such as Isurus can likewise be flown in free-swimming mode from onshore centers.
